Providing ongoing training for drivers & operators

Our award winning 5-star Development Programme for drivers and operators is considered one of the best in the industry. That's good to know, but for us it's more about reducing the number of incidents year on year. We want to keep our drivers and operators safe and make sure their actions don't have a negative impact on those around them.

Keeping ahead of legislative changes is important to us. Over the past year we've been updating our 5-star training for LGV drivers. Now it fully meets the requirements of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) as laid down by the 2003 EU Directive which comes into force for LGV drivers on 10th September 2009. We expect to get our external accreditation before the end of June 2008.

Our development programme has been improving the skills of our LGV drivers and MHE operators for nearly 20 years, making sure they get a day of formal training each year. The classroom and practical sessions cover core elements such as: pre-use equipment circle checks; safe loading and unloading of goods; and techniques for defensive and eco-responsible driving; as well as bespoke elements relevant to our trainees' own roles.

As our business grows so do our training needs. All of our 13 LGV instructors are either Driving Standards Agency (DSA) registered or working towards that qualification. We're also Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR) accredited and all our MHE instructors are ITSSAR registered. This means we can develop our own instructors and examiners which ensures that our approach is consistent and that we can always meet the demand for training.

Ensuring tyres have sufficient tread is part of the pre-journey circle check for every TDG driver
