Aggregate Industries

Creating a high performance managed transport logistics platform for Aggregate Industries

Aggregate Industries (AI) is a leading construction and building materials company for UK, US and European markets. With environmental responsibility high on their agenda, AI needed to optimise their supply chain (involving circa 500 hauliers and a variety of local processes). With lengthy journey times, inconsistent service performance and rising costs: TDG introduced a company-wide 4PL (fourth party logistics) solution to maximise efficiency, reduce empty miles, and cut logistics costs from £48 million.

The eight year contract covers AI’s entire UK road transport operation. Daily activities are co-ordinated via TDG’s 4PL platform located at Linby. All of AI’s referred hauliers remain in place and are now contracted to TDG. Drivers can access up-to-date information on their laptops, and the warehouse systems are all linked, giving transport and warehouse teams complete control. That means greater business clarity for AI; and lets TDG oversee an optimised end-to-end solution.

Delivering quantifiable benefits

  • Savings of over three million road miles per year and carbon emission reductions of 12% are predicted.
  • TDG have achieved base line savings of 10% across 69 national sites.
  • TDG’s KPIs cover on-time delivery, Health & Safety, customer service and continuous improvement. TDG also takes on any associated costs if performance targets are not achieved.

“Both teams wanted the new integrated transport management platform to be a success and worked hard to make it work. We’re really pleased with how straightforward the whole process has been.”
Karl Hudson, Supply Chain Director, Aggregate Industries
