Corus Stores case study: maintaining a responsive and well stocked stores operation
Corus is the second largest steel producer in Europe with annual revenues of over £11 billion. All tin plate manufacturing is conducted at its site in Trostre, South Wales, which has been operating since 1951 and has grown considerably over the years. Today, the Trostre site manufactures 400,000 tonnes of tin plate annually, and, with substantial investments in new plant and technology, people, training, research and development; Trostre is a market leader in the production of tin plate throughout Europe.
Production is highly dependent upon the availability of spare parts, in order that faults or breakdowns can be fixed quickly. To ensure every stage of production runs smoothly, the site includes a specialist stores department to provide essential spares for on site engineers. The 18 separate stores need to be run efficiently and cost effectively: supplies are available 365 days a year and more than 80,000 items are stored with a value exceeding £25 million. With over 200 items passing through the department each day, Corus relies on its stores management operation to closely monitor and manage stock on a daily basis.
