Giving people the tools to run a safe operation
To ensure our workplaces are safe for employees and visitors we:
- provide the necessary training
- understand and manage the risks posed by our operations
- keep a track of what we've done and what is yet to be achieved
- motivate our employees through regular feedback on our progress
All new employees follow an induction programme that includes job-specific training in health and safety. In addition, our drivers of mechanical handling equipment and LGVs attend our 5-star Development Programme for one-day each year. And, office staff receive training on aspects relating to their workplace such as the best posture to adopt at the desk and how to lift heavy items safely.
Each of our sites is assessed so that potential risks can be identified, discussed and minimised. Our IT system "Shadow" carries records of everything we do which helps us to identify and address gaps in our health & safety procedures.
It's important we make sure everyone is motivated to keep up the pace. Much of the effort in this area centres on good communication. We hold regular conferences that focus solely on health and safety; all sites clearly display their health and safety performance, often at the site entrance; and, there are regular site visits by senior management to discuss health and safety issues.
Finally, we recognise the efforts of individuals and depots via our Excellence Awards and our successes are celebrated in our in-house magazine, The Juggler.
We regularly produce films to support our health & safety courses
