TDG invests over £1 million at Newport depot
As part of its drive to reduce carbon emissions TDG is investing over £1 million in a new state of the art cooling plant at its temperature controlled store at Newport, Gwent.
The old air-cooled condensers have been replaced with a highly efficient ‘Star Ammonia’ system. This uses evaporating condensers and floating head technology, which will reduce energy costs and provide the desired environmental benefits.
“Since regulations banned R22, we have been embarking on a policy of updating our refrigerant systems,” says Ian Newell, Regional Manager at TDG. “Over the course of the next 12 months, we will be continuing to invest in the infrastructure of our cold stores throughout the UK.”
The new system at Newport takes full advantage of the latest technology to reduce emissions. It uses motor inverters and PLC (Telstar) controllers to maximize the efficiency of the compressors and improve COP (Co efficiency of Performance). It also uses a combination of screw and reciprocating compressors to achieve best performance ratios during the “off cycling” of the plant, to maximize each compressor’s potential. And the evaporator’s motors have increased fin spacing at the rear of the coil block to maximiseefficiency,
“As well as reduced energy costs, this cold store will have some of the most accurate temperature gradients available. Temperatures are constant across whole chambers, and we have managed to equalisethe temperatures so we have no peaks or troughs anywhere within the temperature controlled storage area" added Newell.
