Sainsbury's

Keeping pace with Sainsbury’s evolving retail strategy

Sainsbury’s are one of the UK’s leading supermarkets and are focused on providing good, healthy, locally sourced food to their 16 million customers.

The company ethos is built on dedication to customers, colleagues, suppliers and investors alike.  In a truly inclusive approach, Sainsbury’s employ a measured approach to improving all standards and ensure that they listen to everyone involved in the day-to-day running of their operations.

Sainsbury’s drive for natural produce and a greener environment means that they demand flexibility and a positive approach to new ideas from all their supply chain partners.

Delivering quantifiable results

  • Its central location makes Rugby a well-placed distribution centre for delivering an average of 400,000 cases of general merchandise per week – more during peak periods.
  • Incorporating around 4,000 product lines at any one time, the 24/7 Rugby operation utilises a total of over 250,000 square feet of warehousing space and a ‘round-the-clock’ team of experienced pickers receiving their instructions via automated wireless wrist ‘watches’ instead of paper lists.
  • Between 10,000 and 18,000 potted plants are received from suppliers in a week from suppliers across Europe and arrive in store the following morning.
  • As well as continually meeting or exceeding its targets and remaining in the top 5 highest performers in the network, Rugby has also successfully achieved ISO 14001 (environmental standard) and ISO Health & Safety Gold Award.

“For us, TDG’s approach is characterised by their flexibility and proactive stance.  Our business is constantly changing and growing – by truly working as part of the Sainsbury’s team, TDG are able to add value at many levels.”
