Here are some top tips from TDG’s transport manager, Peter Loxam. “Driver safety is paramount, regardless of the weather”, he says “but this cold snap needs extra precautions”.

• Ensure there’s a bigger distance than usual between you and the car in front.
• If the conditions get too dangerous, you must just stop
• Take your time
• Be aware of the other road users who aren’t aware of the conditions.
• If the weather’s bad, check if your journey is really necessary. (Could it be done by email/phone?)
• Make sure you’re well prepared ie. with extra clothes/a shovel/flask of hot drink
• Always have plenty of fuel in your tank and make sure your mobile phone is charged.
• Wrap up warm
• If you do have to make a journey, make sure someone has your expected time of arrival and your mobile phone number.
